Terminology
Stage lighting is a world in itself so to make it easier for you we have listed below some of the most common terms relating to our drama kits and a brief explanation of what they are or mean, simply roll over a word for the answers!
PAR 56
This is a type of stage light supplied with conventional kits used for wash effects, they are 300W.
Fresnel
Our fresnel’s are 500W and have a knob to change between spot and flood. Fresnel is the name of the lens type.
Profile
A zoom profile allows you to change the beam angle of the fixture, they can also be used with gobos.
LED RGB
LED fixtures colour mix by varying the intensity of Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B) LED’s – like a colour wheel!
DMX
DMX is a control protocol used by lighting equipment to talk to each other.
Controller
The controller tells the lights what do do, either through a dimmer or direct for LED fixtures.
Dimmer
A dimmer varies the amount of power reaching a light and so the brightness of the bulb.
Colour Gel
Colour gel is plastic film placed in front of a stage light to make it emit that colour, you don’t need it for LED fixtures.
Gobo
A gobo is a metal disc with a pattern or image cut out of it, by placing one in a profile you can project that image.
DMX Cable
DMX Cable is a type of control cable which links together controllers and dimmers or LED fixtures.
Flicker Free
Some LED fixtures appear to strobe when filmed, ours are ‘flicker free’ so can be recorded clearly.
Barn Doors
Barn doors are 4 hinged metal leaves which sit on the front of a light and can be moved to prevent light spill.
There’s lots more we could put here and we will add to it, if you think we have missed something just let us know.
